3 Steps to Cultivate a More Positive Body Image
At the heart of having a positive body image, is having the audacity to be our most authentic self. My mission is to help each of you step into your highest self- the YOU- you know you have the potential to be. But I also know that it starts here- healing your relationship with food and your body so you can have the confidence to do the work that matters. In today’s episode, I’m going to break down 3 steps to having a more positive body image with yourself.
We start with the physical. When we talk about the physical aspects, we are talking about what you look like. I have two things I need you to stop doing: weighing yourself every day and picking apart parts of yourself. It’s important to look at your body as a whole, not as parts. When you look at yourself in the mirror and have the urge to separate your arms, actively stop yourself (ex. oh my arms look great but my thighs are huge today). When you disconnect your body in your mind you disconnect yourself. You take away your power. The truth is that you are most strong when you are whole, so keep the image of you in your head whole.
Let’s move into the mental side of things. I want you to get curious about how judgemental you are of other people’s bodies. When you can get curious about these thoughts, it will be a gold mine of where you are with yourself. Having judgments about other people's bodies is a clear representation of how you feel about yourself. The harsher the judgement the deeper the wound. For a personal example, when I was competing, I thought everyone else was lazy because they weren’t doing what I was doing. I judged others for not looking as great as i did- the truth was the leaner I got the more insecure i was about myself. Everything I was seeing in everyone else was a clear reflection of myself.
The final piece is environmental- this is all about who and what you’re surrounding yourself with! Are you following people who all look the same? Ask yourself- who are you hanging out with and what conversations are you having? If they’re all about body image, then I suggest making a change with your conversations. Your next step is to audit your IG feed and make sure they’re providing you a bunch of value. Maybe following fitness people who post selfies in the workout bras are not serving you right now. That's ok! There's nothing wrong with you. Focus on you.
