Be Who You Are, Not Who You Were
Do you assume that if you just work harder, grind it out, that things will eventually fall into place? I have fallen into that trap many many times, from my days of competing to building my business, one thing I know how to do really well is DO. But doing to have, is the trap.
Changing Our Mindset
We have to switch our current mindset. As it currently stands, we operate under the assumption that in order to be something successful, you have to have credentials and a list of things to do, before you can be the thing you want to be. It’s actually the opposite. We have to be before we can start doing the things it takes to have what we want. Most of us think we need to “have” a certain thing or set of things (more money, love, time, experience, etc.), so that we can finally “do” something important (pursue our passion, start a business, go on vacation, create a relationship, buy a home, etc.), which will then allow us to “be” what we truly want in life (peaceful, fulfilled, inspired, generous, in love, etc.). In actuality, it works the other way around.
Be, Do, Have
First we “be” what we want (peaceful, loving, inspired, abundant, successful, or whatever), then we start “doing” things from this state of being – and soon we discover that what we’re doing winds up bringing us the things we’ve always wanted to “have.” The trap is we get caught up in the DO, and we DO from an old state of BEING, not the new state of BEING we want to have. There is nothing wrong with pursuing your goals with passion and vigor, but when you think that the fulfillment of any goal (getting your dream body or business) will give you what you truly want in life- you set yourself up for disappointment and pain.
Are You Being Who You Want to Be?
The second part of this BE DO HAVE lessons is: Are you being who you want to be, or are you relieving your past? Breaking the habit of being yourself. Our mind doesn't know the difference between make believe and reality (ex. heart palpitations from fear when something hasn't even happened yet). Constantly living in the past and reminding yourself of your past patterns, keeps you stuck there. Knowing who you want to be, is the key to changing. Otherwise you stay stuck in acting how who you’ve been this whole time. If you want to change your life- you have to change one thing you've been doing daily. Your current trajectory comes from your current thoughts. Purposely thinking new thoughts and creating new neural pathways is the only way to break the habit of being yourself on a subconscious level that carries over to a conscious level.
Here’s an exercise for you to practice
Think of one or more of your biggest goals or dreams in your life. What is is that you think the accomplishment of these goals will bring you? Joy, fulfillment, confidence, freedom?
Start to embody that state of being that you assume will come from accomplishing this goal. For example: you think that by having the perfect body you will finally be confident in yourself and motivated to stick to your goals, or that when you reach success in your business by having x amount of clients you'll feel proud and happy. Embody that feeling of confidence and motivation, pride and happiness now.
From this place, start to think and talk about what kinds of actions you want to take. Don't be in a hurry when you do this exercise, let yourself sit with it for a while. If you allow yourself to come from this empowered state of being you'll show up with more ease and it will be so easy to take the actions to get that place you want to get to.
