This episode has been a long time coming! If you have been a long time listener you may have remembered our first episode on connecting with your inner child which was ep 11. Since then I have learned so much more about inner child healing and have successfully utilized it with my life coaching clients. Today’s episode is an update on the more I’ve learned + were going to discuss how to start and continue your healing journey.

If you hesitate to listen to this episode because you're like what the fudge is your inner child that’s way too out there for me, I ask you to have an open mind on this today!! I was completely new to inner child work until last year but let me tell you, it changed my world!!!

What the Heck is Your Inner Child

This is the subconscious side of your brain that holds your body image, self-esteem, trauma, and family shame. It can be huge for those of us who did competitions and even for those of you who didn’t, but have struggled with disordered eating. Knowing that these things are in fact subconscious, we know that we need to do work with either ourselves or a third party to really uncover what our inner child is holding on to.

 Signs It May Need Healing

You may need to really uncover what your inner child is holding onto, really comes down to whether or not you have had struggles in your past. The purpose is for us to do inner child work is to contact, listen, communicate and nurture our inner child. We are doing more than just looking at symptoms of our pain. Some of the most common signs are:

  • Being false

  • Being a super achiever

  • Intimacy problems

  • Being overly responsible for others

  • Addictions

  • And so on

Ultimately, we all have a least a little bit of something.

How a wounded or neglected inner child can lead to an epidemic of never feeling good enough

Many times we have some sort of an unhealthy relationship with a parent/relative who would act in a negative way when something bad happens and you become codependent. Your codependency essentially looks like you doing whatever you can to make the other person happy. Therefore, you’re always working to make someone else happy even if it means we make ourselves miserable.

These wounds are deep down inside and it’s not until we start connecting with our inner child, that we can really move forward.

Benefits to healing inner child

There are some really great benefits to healing your inner child. Some of the best parts include:

  • You are able to feel again after years of feeling numb

  • Lots of personal power

  • You learn to take better care of yourself

  • Really knowing who you are

  • You are able to enjoy your life and have fun

  • You gain self-confidence

How to start your inner child healing journey

I have a couple resources as to where you can start with this. Here are two questions to start with:

  • Whose love did you crave the most as a child?

  • Who did you have to become to receive that love?

When you can answer this question, you can get down to one of your core wounds. These are those fears or patterns that we keep acting out of.

In order to continue with this, ask yourself and do some journaling on what your inner child needs to hear today?

Once you really dive into this work, you can start to catch yourself and work through times when your inner child is feeling neglected.

Ultimately, I highly recommend doing coaching or therapy of some sort. This has been such a huge piece for me and the inner work I’ve done.

Does this journey ever end?

Our inner purpose to continue is to discover ourselves and more of ourselves and so we must continue to work and heal our inner child. We ultimately want to be the best version of ourselves and so our journey never stops.
