Where Do We Go From Here?

There's no question that there is a lot going on in the world. From the global pandemic, to Black Lives Matter, we have seen SO much come up in our collective. I took some time off after our last episode of Your Highest Self to help amplify POC voices and I made some serious changes.

The Steps I Took

Once we had the Black Lives Matter movement really amplified, I had to be really honest with myself about where my biases lie and what sorts of changes I can make in my own life. I started following so many more black men and women on social media and really found that in order to make a lasting change, I needed to approach this sort of growth as I do with any of my self development. I needed to be uncomfortable and be willing to admit where change needed to be made.

Things I DON’T Want to Go Back to Normal

So the real question- where do we go from here? I know that so many of us get super overwhelmed with all of this change. The focus right now for me, is on resilience so I can keep up with the changes going on. I started with asking myself what sorts of things from the pandemic shut down and this new normal where we amplify black voices, do I not want to go back to. Here are some of the things I don’t want to go back to “normal”:

  • Not talking with my siblings

  • Not giving myself the time to pursue the goals I have for myself

  • Being blissfully ignorant about the way black people are treated

  • Not feeling strong enough to have conversations with people when they say something racist

How to Give Yourself Space

I understand that this stuff is heavy. It is. It can take a lot out of us and I want to give you permission, if you haven’t given it to yourself to take care of yourself. Becoming an anti-racist and changing the way we’ve lived our lives day in and day out is a marathon, not a sprint. We have to be willing to do the things we need to do to take care of ourselves. Some of my favorite things to do are:

  • Log off Instagram

  • Go outside

  • Go on a mini staycation

I am pushing myself to not just check out! Let’s be better and let’s do better.

I have a couple pieces of advice to help you push through the discomfort.

Check Your Energetic Capacity

This is important to keep in mind right now, but it’s also great to keep in mind as you move forward with any huge changes in your life. You may have the time to do something, but sometimes you don’t have the energetic capacity to do things. Ask yourself and be honest, what do you actually need right now?

You Have to Make It Sustainable

Anti-racist work, personal development work, and becoming your highest self isn’t something that happens overnight. You have to be willing to be put in the time over a longer period of time before you start to see actual growth. It has to be sustainable. Be present in moment and stop trying to get somewhere!
